Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds

(Released: 17 October 2011)

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds debut album offers an array of airy, sophisticated songs, whose vocals synchronize against the fanciful fanfare of sounds. With hazey shades of Oasis’s Don’t Believe the truth, The Kinks and Richard Ashcroft the album saunters and meanders towards a safe musical horizon. Soaring between octaves of sweet falsetto and deadpan delivery, Noel’s vocals have never sounded better. Lyrically the album is well crafted and versatile, in particular during the lyrics of “If I Had A Gun”: “Scuse me if I spoke too soon/ my eyes have always followed you around the room/ ’cause you’re the only God I will ever need…”. Its lyrical gems like this which encapsulates Noel’s effortless charm and loaded emotions.  It’s also an album which parades a carefree wave of trad-jazz trumpet, sax, violins, trombones, piano, acoustic & electric guitars, customised by back-seat angelic choirs. In a nutshell Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds is a mature and breezy album, sounding like the “Oasis baggage” has finally flown the nest.
