Single of the Week- “Back to the Great Lakes” by Olympian

Olympian are a baroque pop, art rock band from Manchester whose classical and rock infused riffs create an elegant and grandiose of sounds. Comprised of Aron Robinson on vocals/guitars, Rob Fowler on piano/keyboard, Tom Carver on guitars, Stephen Cordiner on keyboard, Tanah Stevens on violin and David Hornberger on cello, Olympian are impeccably tailored, bolstered by Robinson’s rich baritone vocals. With fragments of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Arcade Fire, Olympian eases you into the heart of baroque pop, whilst gripping you with Robinson’s distinctive voice. Musically accomplished, Olympian are a breath of fresh air, providing a pristine presentation of contemporary music with a classical motif.

Having released their EP on 21st of November 2012, Olympian have been gigging locally to promote their latest single “Back to the Great Lakes”. Released on 15th March 2013, “Back to the Great Lakes” is a hauntingly beautiful song,  that cuts to the soul, with its sweeping and screechy pitched violins. Along with its throbbing cello, delicate, nimble-fingered, reverberating riffs and spacious piano tinkles, “Back to the Great Lakes” evokes a strong imagery through the poetic and emotionally driven lyrics. Lyrics such as “We’ll go back to the blue skies, go back to the great lakes, we will find what it takes to put some magic back in our eyes…” encapsulate the powerful sentiments of the song. It’s a wonderful song, whose emotional discord is reflected in the stunning soundscape, which comes together in unison, to create a euphoric crescendo.
