Single of the Week: “Mm mm mm ah” by Modern Family Unit (MFU)

Modern Family Unit (MFU) are an electro-new wave duo from Manchester, comprised of Gary Hilton on vocals/ bass  and Steve Southern on keyboard/guitar who collectively create a conceptualised landscape, for their dynamic and sensuous  music. A solid unit, (MFU) are masters of their own material and whose eclectic and observational lyrics encompass all things worldly, philosophical and edging towards the dark realms of life. With an album in the pipeline, MFU have been working with Mark Reeder, who has produced a remixed version of my single of the week, “Mm mm mm ah”.

With its piercing beats, Numan-esque, slithering and celestial synths, “Mm mm mm ah”  is a sleek, sassy and seductive number. It’s a great song whose “come hither” vocals are smeared with dark, devilish over-tones. With the added presence of Burlesque dancer Shireen Ashton, “Mm mm mm ah” is overtly sexy, both stylistically and visually, creating an all round, polished and captivating production. With so many electro-guitar infused bands that take the industrial and goth route,  it makes a refreshing change that “Modern Family Unit” have created a more playful and flirty soundscape, allowing the succinct chorus to entice and take centre-stage. Immaculately crafted, “Mm mm mm ah”, creates an abstract soundscape, allowing the animated inserts to enhance the sexed up narrative. Along with the brooding bass and piano-esque synths, “Mm mm mm ah” flickers and streams under a retro night sky, whilst maintaining an original and infectious sound.
