“Victorian Dad” are an alternative rock band from Wigan whose fusion of upbeat and jagged sounds make them distinctive and original amongst their peers. Like a reluctant crooner, “Victorian Dad” kicks out any lingering melancholy and sends it packing along a sophisticated and progressive path. Comprised of David Rybka on vocals/guitar, Matthew Gallagher on guitar, Thomas Doherty on bass, Thomas Yates on Mandolin/guitars, Fran Lydiatt on accordion/keyboards and Matt McNicholas on drums,“Victorian Dad” are an impressive band whose recent live performances have caught the eye of ex-Smiths Mike Joyce and Tom Robinson at BBC 6 Music. Now working on their EP and playing up and down the country, “Victorian Dad” are a band definitely worth checking out and one whose latest song “Thin Thread” has been chosen as my single of the week.

Through the opening tinkering riffs, brooding bass, subtle keyboards and choppy percussions, “Thin Thread” begins by unravelling the tension and sentiments of the song. It’s a moving song, whose aching vocals and gritty lyrics intensify against the reverberating and bluesy-rock riffs. It’s also a song whose shuffle beats and backing vocals ebb and flow against the tumultuous tides of pounding beats and wave of engulfing riffs. Through the looping and staccato riffs, “Thin Thread” surfs, pecks and crashes against the burning ambience of the song.  It’s a brilliant song, whose guitar dexterity fluctuates whilst releasing an acute range of emotions.
