Munky Boots are an alternative rock band from Manchester, whose catchy and gusty songs reel with a vibrant energy against the raw lyrics. With Monica Ward on vocals, Mike Murray on guitar, Johnny Stringer on bass and Peter Bates on drums, Munky Boots are very much your loyal, progressive rock band, which is enlivened by Ward’s presence. As a vocalist, Ward commands and grips the song through her fresh and husky tinged tones. Sounding like a stronger, more soulful Debbie Harry, Ward is a real asset to the band, as not only does she have this big voice , she is also blessed with good looks and has a smile which could light up a room. Now working on their EP, Munky Boots have been busy gigging including headlining a charity event for a children’s hospice on July 20th 2013.
“It Hurts” is a song which lays its soul bare and reveals a resolute core that rises from the ashes. It’s a solid hybrid of soul and blues that is true to its soft rock roots. Produced by Craig Gannon, who also supplied the additional guitars, “It Hurts” is almost anthemic for heartbreak, bringing real sentiments to the forefront and whose up-tempo interludes overturn the melancholy. With its swaying, jangly riffs, “It Hurts” reflects and resonates against Ward’s soaring vocals. Lyrically “It Hurts” is frank and heartfelt, whose sentiments are encapsulated in the words, “ I don’t want to spend another night with someone who can only have a fight…”. Along with the underlay of gospel-esque backing vocals and lines such as “Everything I do, I do it with you in mind…” , “It Hurts” builds to an emotionally driven crescendo, whilst intensifying the soul/blues motif against the bashing beats. It’s a great song, whose solo guitar interlude rolls and curls, building the song to a solemn out-tro.
