For those who don’t know The High Nines are a Mancunian five-piece consisting of Dean Ashton (Vocals), Steve Cornell (Guitar/Vocals),Karl Such (Bass/Vocals) Nathan Lowe (Drums) and Trevor Curley (Lead Guitar). Having recently signed to “Scruff Of The Neck records” and played at a sell-out gig at the Night and Day Cafe, The High Nines have since released “Paupers and Kings” and “The Stealer”. The spirit of Oasis, The Who and other rowdy rock ‘n’ roll bands is strong within them; this is a band with a gang mentality and it suits them well. ‘Rainman’ was the bands hit single last year, and is a track intended as giveaway song for their highly supportive fans; it’s a brooding and menacing track, almost tribal in intensity. It begins with an arpeggiated electric guitar motif which spirals along throughout the song, accompanied by grinding power chords, rumbling bass, tom-tom heavy drums and gutsy vocals. The harmony-lines that shadow the vocals on the almost chanted chorus work provide even greater atmosphere to the track.

As for the subject matter, I’m not sure who this ‘Rain Man’ is but I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t want to meet him – he certainly doesn’t like the character Dustin Hoffman played in the film of the same name, more like the kind of mythical figure Robert Johnson met at the crossroads. There is a kind of pop-art, mod energy in The High Nines style which has already earned them a strong fan-base and it’s growing all the time. Their music is tough, tight, impassioned – it’s rock without any pretences. This song has been picking up a great deal of interest on both local and national radio and was played during half-times at Old Trafford, so this a band who are going places.
