Single of The Week - "Restore Us" by Permafrost

Permafrost are a Norwegian-UK post-punk band whose guitar-synth infused music steps back into the origins of synth-pop, whilst embracing the dark-wave debris. Formed in 1982, Permafrost are provocateurs of alternative rock, who make music that allures, intrigues and unravels a subtle sequence of mood-shifting melancholy, that reflects from the shadows and beams from the light.

Originally comprised of just Frode Heggdal Larsen, the band now includes Kåre Steinsbu, Robert Heggdal, Trond Tornes and Daryl Bamonte, who as a collective reach out to a cross-section of generations. After achieving success in their native Norway with their singles “Closed Eyes” and “Femme Fatale” in 2019, Permafrost have now released their latest song Restore Us. Released on Friday 3rd September 2021, Restore Us has been selected as my “Single of the Week”.

Restore Us renews and regenerates its new wave origins with a tidal wave of post-punk, reminiscent of early U2, The Chameleons, Joy Division and The Sound. It’s a captivating track whose dusky drones and nimble-fingered riffs awaken the senses and thaw away the rock residue. Through the baritone vocals and sunken bass, Restore Us glides, collides and descends in an ambient abyss. Impeccably cinematic, Restore Us is meticulously crafted, whose pristine textures are interwoven with an interplay of brooding darkness that shifts towards ethereal rock, whilst retaining a weather-beaten zone.
