Single Of The Week - "The Girls Of LA" by Weimar

Weimar are an alternative rock band from Manchester whose eclectic mix of upbeat optimism and dark dwellings sits in the recesses of 60s liberation, 70s glam and 80s new wave. They are a band that intermixes the colourful essence of art-rock that orbits from the idiosyncratic space-stations of post-punk. Featuring band members from a range of bands, Weimar are the bona-fide “super-group”, whose fluidity of sounds, and collective mindset thinks outside the box and drifts down the non-linear pathways of rock n roll.

Comprised of Aidan Cross on vocals/rhythm guitar (The Bacillus & The Black Light Mutants), John Armstrong on bass/ backing vocals (The Speed Of Sound), Anthony ‘Eddy’ Edwards on drums (The Deceased & BuzzKocks) and Stephen Sarsen on lead guitar/backing vocals (Frank Is Dead, The Bacillus, Taylor & the Mason and Playground), Weimar are a band that revisits the animated aesthetics of prog-rock and adds a sonic sheen of space-pop.

Staying true to the band’s DIY ethos of post-punk, Weimar’s latest single, “The Girls Of LA”, has been selected as my “Single Of The Week”. Released on March 25th 2022, The Girls Of LA is packaged with the B-side ‘Transatlantic Confusion’, a reworking of a song by singer Aidan Cross and guitarist Stephen Sarsen’s former band The Bacillus. Two great tracks for the price of one, the double-sided single will feature on the band’s forthcoming album, “Dancing On A Volcano”, set to release on June 24th 2022.

The Girls Of LA goes back to the glitter-sparkle of glam-rock, whilst reviving the preening showmanship of New Wave. Through the creative spirit and compelling vocals of Cross, The Girls of LA stands its ground and dazzles under the bright lights of art-rock and emitting an array of hues. As a frontman, Cross swings between the flamboyant flares of Bowie and Bolan, whilst shining from the shadows of kohl-eyed goth-rock, combined with the magic realism of esoteric cabaret. He’s a real debonair dream-maker, a talented singer/songwriter that radiates from the flourishing art of experimentation and all things avant-garde. Like a graduate straight from a post-Bauhaus School of art, Cross is a great advocate of freedom of expression, that challenges pre-conceptions and redefines and reunites cinema and art.

As a track, The Girls of LA throbs from the lifelines of punk, and whose jaunty riffs pogo-jump down the converse corridors of post-Brit-pop. Through the striking bass, The Girls Of LA shoots from the family album of JJ Burnel, that rattles and rumbles down the predatory pathways of post-punk. Along with intriguing lyrics, The Girls Of LA is a great reminder of music that isn’t afraid to walk on the wild-side and revisit the hedonistic indulgence of the late 60s, reminiscent of The Doors, Iggy Pop and The Velvet Underground. It’s a tantalising taboo breaker that explores the darker side of human nature, that peers through the smokescreen of sunny LA.

As of March 25th 2022, ‘The Girls of LA’ will be available everywhere digitally, including Spotifyand Apple Music, as well as through German Shepard Records directly and the artist’s Bandcamp. The full ”Dancing On A Volcano’ LP, set to release on June 24th, will be available digitally and also on CD. It can already be ordered via Weimar’s own Marlene’s Hat imprint.
