Single Of The Week - "Francesco (Italiano)" by London Plane

London Plane are an alternative rock band from NYC whose powerful and dramatic stance, rotates from the time zones of new wave prevalent in the late 70s and early 80s. They are a mesmerising band, whose alternating vocals are reminiscent of all the greats, from Peter Murphy, to Siouxsie Sioux, to Karen O and Richard Butler. Comprised of David Mosey (guitar and vocals), Jessica Cole (vocals), Bryan Garbe (drums), Grant Parker (bass), Julian Tulip (synths) and Kristofer Widholm (guitar), London Plane are a charismatic band, who draw you in as they effortlessly cross over into an array of genres of that classic Indie band.

They are the real deal, the bona-fide rock band that carries the baton of post-punk and adds a firebrand of individuality, originality and progression. They are a collective that injects a strong dose of showmanship, with a beguiling breeze of dark-wave aesthetics and gusty glamour, that revives all that is majestic, uncompromising and cultured in a world of uncertainty. Ahead of their album “Bright Black”, released on June 17^th 2022, London Plane have released the singles ‘Francesco (Italiano)’ and ‘Watch That Madman Go’, which give you a sneaky glimpse of their talent as artists. Fierce, invigorating and diverse, both tracks are of a high calibre, pulsating at high velocity, whilst grabbing you by the jugular.

Selected as my Single Of The Week, Francesco (Italiano) bounces straight from the new wave disco of 79, whilst having a boogie with Bauhaus in a post-punk party. It’s a mesmerising track, that revisits the dark wave ambience of classic goth-rock and adds a contemporary cast of indie-pop. Through the throbbing bass and smoky strums, Francesco (Italiano) levitates and loops down the abandoned corridors of ethereal rock, whilst leaving a trail of sonic suspense. It’s a spiked cocktail of Krautrock, inebriated by its adrenaline and air-lifted by its spirit. It’s a track that spins in an underground club of dance-punk, and jangles from the closet of funk-rock. Along with the striking vocals, Francesco (Italiano) resurrects the spectral sonics of new wave, bringing forth the phantom-esque theatrics from a golden age of alternative rock.

Watch That Madman Go beats from the tribal heart of post-punk and broods from the powder-parlour of goth-rock. It’s a metallic mesh of blackened vocals, abrasive riffs and chopstick synths that sinks to the murky depths of Krautrock. Along with the funky bass and robust beats, Watch That Madman Go stays true to its dance-punk roots, whilst unearthing the lost treasures of new wave. Along with the idiosyncratic vocals and provocative lyrics, Watch That Madman Go digs deep within the darkness of dystopian rock, whilst shining a torch on current affairs.
