Fiires rise from the ashes of classic darkwave, picking up the spectrum plectrums of post-punk and strumming with the lost souls of goth rock. They are a majestic band from the West Midlands that resuscitate the air from ambient rock, whilst exhaling the dark mist of noise rock. They are a band that subtly draws you in, weaving webs from all directions, whilst collecting dust from the nebulous corners of its soul. They are the bona fide dark knights of creativity, passion and melodrama, putting the art form back into music and reflecting the broken mirrors like a shield between time and space.
Comprised of Andy Black (DNAR) on Vocals, Bass, Guitars, Mark Neat (Black Rose Moves) on Keyboards, Guitars, and Mark Davies on Drums, there is something wonderfully nostalgic and familiar with Fiires. They are an authentic band, a band that has lived through the innovative timelines of New Wave, Punk, Post-Punk, Krautrock, Industrial Rock, Shoegaze and Darkwave, and breathed new life into the fading fog of yesteryear. Think Bauhaus, The Sisters of Mercy, The Mission, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Sound, Joy Division, The Jesus and Mary Chain and all the pioneers of avant-garde experimentation, and blend it with a contemporary spin of blood-thirsty theatrics, then you get an echo of their cavernous sound. You see, with Fiires, they are the real deal, they resonate with an age that gave us the foundations, hidden chambers, and trapdoors of eerie acoustics, dark, dramatic aesthetics, and sub-culture identities.
Just listening to their debut EP, “Shadows of Angels“, you feel like you are reviving the past lives of post-punk, and floating through the vaporous clouds of New Wave. It’s an epic EP, whose tracks are a captivating blend of beguiling basslines, jagged guitar and razor riffs, levitating among the apparitional ambience and noir suspense of goth-rock. Along with the spooky synths, and the haunting vocals, “Shadows of Angels” is an EP that resurrects the elusive psyche and enigmatic mystique that is deeply embedded in the alter egos of darkwave. It’s gothic literature come to life, written in riddles, poetically posed, and bound with a lock and key to protect all its dark secrets. It’s music that appeals to a cross-generation of Indie kids who appreciate the style and substance of real music that sings from a collective soul of lucid soundscapes, amplified emotions, brooding intensity, evolving electronics, and dusky dramatics. “Shadows of Angels” is an EP that I strongly recommend and that has been selected as The Manc Review’s “EP of the Month”.
