The So and So’s are an alternative rock band from Cleethorpes whose spectrum of genres make them a diverse and accomplished band. With Richard Dutton on vocals/guitars, Rob Distant on guitar/Hammond, Paul Grant on drums, Danny Thomas on bass, Franco Knight on triangle, Craig Revel on guitar/bass and Patrick Knight on keys/synths, The So and So’s are one of those unpredictable bands which keep you on your toes. Through their fusion of shimmery and sitar riffs, The So and So’s dabble with a mystical, psychedelic Eastern vibe, reminiscent of early Verve, whilst crossing over to a more upbeat, forceful, acoustic, soul, jazz and folk sound. With such a mix-bag of sounds, The So and So’s wear their influences like an endless list and notably it’s through the powerful vocals of Dutton that the band really is a force of nature. Along with guest vocals by Shannon Reilly, The So and So’s reinforce that quintessential 60s sassy sound, whilst embracing a bohemian backdrop of beats.
“First One off The Waltzer” is a head spinner of a song, whose stomping beats and vocal delivery is reminiscent of classic Northern Soul. Through its Hammond fog, “First One off The Waltzer” creates a fairground flashback sequence that synchronises with the lyrics, whilst dabbling with 60s psychedelica. Lyrically narrative,” First One off The Waltzer” conjures up images of youthful yesterday with gems such as “…She’s gone home with the DJ, my friends said you were easy…whilst skimming over with an edgy aahhhhooooo”. Along with the backing vocals and dipping/looping Hammond interludes, “First One of The Waltzer”, is steeped in sentimental nostalgia, whilst reinforcing a halcyon and upbeat soundscape.
