Sommelier are an alternative rock band from Pittsburgh, US whose distinct sound exudes class, quality and finesse. Comprised of J. Trafford on vocals/bass, Brian Ferrell on lead guitars/synths, Zach Coss on guitars and Chris Isaacs on drums, Sommelier reflects, unites, consolidates the glories of guitar laden music whilst drifting towards the shores of Baroque-rock. They are an emotionally driven band, whose heightened sensitivity and poetic musings create music that ebbs and flows in the dark depths of post-punk and New Wave. Following the success of their EP Survivalist in 2021, Sommelier have been busy working on their latest EP Alt Weakly, which has been selected as my “EP Of The Day”.
Released on 15th April 2022, Alt Weakly is a soothing sanctuary of jangly riffs, rumbling beats and pristine vocals that revisit and revitalise the dexterity and showmanship of classic alt-rock. It’s a polished production, an immaculate work of art, that shines from the stars of neo-blues, jolts from the lightning of art-rock and preens from the high-voltage of post-hardcore.
It’s an EP that remedies the remnants of 90s Brit-pop and adds a sophisticated sheen of wistful melancholy. It’s music that elongates and revisits the desolate dwellings of darkwave and shimmers from the shadows of neo-psychedelia. Through the soothing vocals and aloof harmonies, Alt Weakly evokes a sense of yearning and warm nostalgia, that blends beautifully with the cascading riffs. Along with the oblique strums and murky ambience Alt Weakly lies in the recesses of proto-grunge, whilst sanitising its soul.
