Panjoma are an experimental, dark-wave, electronica, Sophisti-pop-infused funk duo formed in 2006, whose original and artfully crafted music beats from the epicentre of Electroclash and shines from the neon lights of ambient-pop. Comprised of Mary Panjoma (vocals, keyboard, production) and Patrik Nilsson (bass, drum machines, samplers, production) Panjoma are an elemental force of nature that shifts between the seasons of synth-pop, backtracking to the origins of neo-psychedelia, whilst tilting its axis towards folktronica.
Through the entrancing vocals and twitching tonality, Panjoma are daydream believers that sit amongst the deserted soundscape of dark romanticism and awakened by the sensuality of slow-core. Think Lana Del Rey meets Alison Goldfrapp in a cinematic arthouse of exotic melancholy, then you get the idea. Listening to Panjoma is like taking an ethereal escape to a languid land, where you feel the cool breeze neo-jazz, dancing with lost realities, and chasing utopian fantasies. Like undercover sonic spies of synth-pop, Panjoma noir-navigates through its lucid dreams, whilst being awakened by its own fantasies.
Following the success of their Panjoma album in 2012, Personacide album released in 2014, the singles Death Mantra and Transmit Invocation, Panjoma are back with their new EP Sun and Moon, whose single Sun and Moon was testament to their originality and versality as artists. Released on 26th February 2022, the EP also features their single Free, which has been selected as my “Single Of The Day”.
Free backtracks in a whirlpool of neo-psychedelia, looping between the time and space of electronica. It’s a captivating track that dives deep into the subconscious of dreampop and awakens in a lucid labyrinth of ethereal pop. Through the sensuous vocals of Panjoma, Free creates an exotic ambience of slow-core, that floats with the eerie breeze of synth-pop. A spellbinding spin, an eclectic escapade, Free translucently transmutes from the infinite space of drum and bass, whilst trip-hopping from its tribal beats. Along with the undercurrents of baroque rock, Free swims aloofly towards a distant shore.
