Rodney Cromwell is a singer-songwriter and artist whose hallucinogenic haze of electronica takes you down a minimalistic maze of synth-pop that transcends a dream-like state. Through his pristine production, Cromwell’s music is classically crafted and stays true to the avant-garde influences of synth-pop. Like a cool breeze of 60s lounge pop, combined with the innovative sounds of electronica, Cromwell’s music is an eclectic mix of swirly synths, neon-illumination and abstract ambience. Dipping in the DNA pool of Air, Kraftwerk, Neu, Stereolab and Goldfrapp, Cromwell is an artist whose politically infused and emotionally driven lyrics reflect the uncertainties and disillusions of our times.
Having released his debut LP Age of Anxiety (2015) and Rodney’s English Disco EP (2018), Cromwell has been busy touring across the UK and Spain supporting artists such as Pram, Marsheaux, Death & Vanilla, Rowetta and Steve Davis. In 2020, Cromwell also performed as part of Damo Suzuki’s backing band whilst gaining a growing fan base.
Following the success of his self-titled track, Memory Box released on 27th October 2021, and the single Opus Three, along with the B-side Perception Management, on 3rd February 2022, and his new album Memory Box released on March 18th 2022, Cromwell has released his new EP Opus Three Remixes on 20th April 2022 on all digital platforms via Happy Robot Records.
A 5-track collection of remixes, Opus Three Remixes also features contributions by NYC’s #RomanAngelos, Ireland’s Circuit3 and Britain’s Field Glass. It’s an eclectic, infectious and carefree catalogue of sounds, that brings out the feel good fun factor, during these dark days. It’s an EP that reworks all the signature sounds of Cromwell and adds a glitzy gloss and industrial sheen.
Opus Three Remixes regresses back to the prolific age of 80s synth-pop and bobs under the glitterball of disco pop. It’s a soda-stream of sugary synths and bubble-gum basslines that effervesce in an arthouse of ambient pop. Through the pitter-patter synths , hallucinogenic hammond, xylophonic tinkles and robust beats, Opus Three remixes a cocktail of neo-psychedelia, house, dark-wave and dance-trance, and creates a quirky catharsis. Along with the breezy vocals and cool delivery, Opus Three dances with its feet placed on terra firma, whilst feeling the ripples of the sun-drenched synths and Stylophonic charm.
It’s an uplifting EP, that makes want to have a kitchen disco and create a bit of mayhem in the comfort of your own home. It’s a robot roam into the wilderness of electronica that rummages through the mechanical nuts and bolts of industrial rock and remoulds the model . Think Depeche Mode hanging out with Kraftwerk and Alice In Wonderland, then you kind of get the idea.
