Friendmaker are an alternative folk band from Ireland whose captivating music draws comparisons with Elliott Smith, Bright Eyes, The National, Damien Rice, Father John Misty, Weezer and Snow Patrol. Comprised of David Marron (Sanzkrit, Somefinn) on vocals and guitar, Maolíosa McMahon on vocals and keyboard, Paul Finn on guitar and vocals, Paul Markey on bass and Fintan Marron on drums, Friendmaker are true troubadours, pensive poets whose music cuts to the bone and send shivers down the spine. It’s music that goes back to the roots of folk music, that adds a meticulous layer of Indie rock, whilst classically crafted. Currently working on their debut album, Friendmaker, and following the success of their debut track, You Me And Everything Else, the band have released their latest single Weird which has been selected as my “Single Of The Week”.
Weird awakens from the jangly lights of Indie pop and bobs to the space beats of dreampop. It’s a mesmerising track, whose catchy chorus roars from the bedrock of grunge, and wallows in its angsty ambience. Through with the oscillating riffs and fluty synths, Weird slides between the realms of neo-psychedelia and folk, whilst coming around from its slumberous state. Along with the shimmering strums, and warbling synths, Weird dives underneath a shower of shoegaze, whilst heading towards the hillsides of neo-folk.
