Kaapstaad is an electro-ambient act from Sweden, masterminded by artist and producer Tim Spelman, best known for his work with Tiny Fighter and Fire To The Stars. An established artist, Spelman created Kaapstaad as a result of the pandemic, which fuelled his creativity and offered an outlet to explore more musical horizons.
With support from Swedish collaborators Marcus Wallberg and Tommy Wilen, Kaapstaad has created a synth-pop pathway that nestles in the chambers of neo-classicalism and experimental electronica. Drawing comparisons with Michael Nyman, Grouper, Neils Frahm, Agnes Obel, Olafur Arnalds, Ludovico Enaudi, BVG and Tibeauthetraveller, Kaapstaad creates music that evokes an emotional soundscape, that expands like a film score during the break of dawn. Having been busy working on new material, Kaapstaad has released his second single Aula, which has been selected as my Single Of The Day.
A sublime track, Aula is a mood mover, whose melancholic motif streams between the sonic shifts and nebulous nuances of a sparse soundscape. An instrumental wonder, Aula drifts across the neo-classicism landscape of hazy hues and escapes to a far away place. Through the piano-esque synths, Aula walks its heavy footprints on the sandy beach of ambient rock, whilst feeling the breeze of baroque rock. Along with the backtrack of eerie synths, Aulu loops like a siren, shipwrecked at a neo-psych shore, in between the shuffle beats of synth-pop. It’s a hauntingly beautiful track, that broods and daydreams in a spin of cinematic bewilderment.
