Single Of The Day - "Soho Rain" by Weimar

Weimar are an alternative rock band from Manchester whose eclectic mix of upbeat optimism and dark dwellings sits in the recesses of 60s liberation, 70s glam and 80s new wave. They are a band that intermixes the colourful essence of art-rock, that orbits from the idiosyncratic space-stations of post-punk. Featuring band members from a range of bands, Weimar are the bona-fide “super-group”, whose fluidity of sounds, and collective mindset thinks outside the box and drifts down the non-linear pathways of rock n roll.

Comprised of Aidan Cross on vocals/rhythm guitar (The Bacillus & The Black Light Mutants), John Armstrong on bass/ backing vocals (The Speed Of Sound), Anthony ‘Eddy’ Edwards on drums (The Deceased & BuzzKocks) and Stephen Sarsen on lead guitar/backing vocals (Frank Is Dead, The Bacillus, Taylor & the Mason and Playground), Weimar are a band that revisits the animated aesthetics of prog-rock and adds a sonic sheen of space-pop.

Following the success of their singles “The Girls Of LA”, with the B-side “Transatlantic Confusion”, Weimar have been busy working on their debut album “Dancing On A Volcano” and whose latest track Soho Rain has been selected as my Single Of The Day.

Released on the 3rd June 2022, “Soho Rain” strums from the sidewalk of post-punk, whilst roaming through the back-alleys of new wave. Through the commanding vocals, Soho Rain wallows in the melancholic chambers of darkwave, whilst navigating through the nocturnal aftermath of urban decay. Through the spoken-word delivery, Soho Rain evokes a sense of an outsider looking in, observing from afar, whilst peering up close. Along with the smoky saxophone, Soho Rain trails under a vaporous mist of suspense, whilst creating a noir ambience. It’s a great track, that flashes in the subway of art-rock and illuminates under the red-lights of jangly rock.

On June 3rd, ‘Soho Rain’ will be available exclusively via Bandcamp, where the ‘Dancing On A Volcano’ LP (out June 24th) can be pre-ordered. It will be released everywhere, including Spotify and Apple Music via German Shepherd Record and also on CD via Marlene’s Hat Records.
